How do I decontaminate safety harness and ropes following asbestos strip out work?
The ropes and harnesses could potentially be contaminated whilst the works are under taken.
One option may be to treat the equipment as contaminated and then dispose of it as waste at the end of the project.
Alternatively you could use the equipment on asbestos projects only. You could also minimise the contamination by wearing double coveralls and only have the lanyards exposed outside of the coveralls. You should make sure you have a safe system of work for this process and that covers the storage of the equipment between projects / how to bag the equipment / how to don and doff the equipment in the works / decontamination areas etc. You will also have to think about the LOLER inspection of this equipment which should be inspected by a competent person every 6 months.
If you require additional training on the decontamination process and use of the equipment as per the safe system of work, please contact a UKATA training provider.
